DURABLE BUILDING MATERIALS
The building envelope can be more than just a shell.  Insulated concrete is an excellent
choice as a durable and disaster resistant building material. Concrete walls and floors can
provide thermal storage and a heat sink: storing the sun’s heat energy in winter, keeping
the home cooler in summer. Heating and cooling expenses can be tremendously reduced.
WINDOW MANAGEMENT
Proper sizing and placement of non-south facing
windows, overhangs, and landscaping provide
shading from summer sun. Low-E windows are
recommended and specially designed low-E
glazings are used on the south facing windows
INSULATION
A high R-value indicates resistance to heat loss.
Adequate levels of insulation for attic, walls,
foundation, and floors are critical; also adding to
the comfort and reduced operation expenses.
Proper installation and attention to detail is critical
to it's effectiveness.
HIGH EFFICIENCY EQUIPMENT
Passive solar design is highly effective but you still
need to install an energy efficient back-up system.
Typical HVAC systems can be downsized in a
passive solar home which also helps to reduce on
installation cost.
ENERGY STAR APPLIANCES
AND LIGHTING
The EPA Energy Star label on appliances and
lighting fixtures offers certification that they are
significantly more energy efficient.  These are
especially important choices in a solar home
where every watt counts.
HEALTHY HOUSE
There are standards from the American Lung
Association  for a Healthy House: for
example, using a energy recovery ventilation
system, hard surface floors avoiding wall to
wall carpet, and low VOC products.
WHEELCHAIR ACCESS
Wider doors and halls, the elimination of stairs,
handrails, and proper cabinets make the home
handicap accessible.
Green buildings is a common term for sustainable design and construction.  We no longer
build passive solar concrete homes, but can advise you in the design, specifications, and
selection of a contractor and building materials. Following are important features that should
be considered in any new construction.

ORIENTATION
Pasive solar design works very well  in almost any climate.  Increase south facing windows to
achieve direct gain from sun in winter avoid hot summer sun by reducing east and west
windows. Determine site selection, building orientation, window placement and treatment
based on the local climate and latitude. The home can be a provider of energy by harnessing
the sun in winter, breezes in summer, and natural daylight all year. The overall result is a
higher quality of living at a substantially reduced expense. Ask about our Pre-Design Energy
Analysis using Energy-10 solftware.
